Game MechanicAchievementsDrive Beyond Horizons has 59 Steam achievements. Many are travel-distance milestones — First Steps (1 km), Sunday Explorer (5 km), Seasoned Roadster (10 km), Desert Nomad (20 km) and beyond — while others reward restoring a vehicle to all of its original parts (the "Restorer" achievements).
Game MechanicBirdsBirds appear as flocks flying in the sky, and can pass within a few metres of the road or ground if the player is high enough. They are non-threatening, and their model appears based on a black (or dark-grey) rural Australian species.
Game MechanicComputerThe computer is found at most stops and at the garage. It is used to buy items and pick up quests through six apps — including RS Shop Parts (buy almost any part for any vehicle) and So•Fa Sit Happens (furniture).
Game MechanicCtrl+S StationThe Ctrl+S Station lets you save any vehicle to the garage, or transfer it between saves — even between multiplayer saves. You start with three save slots; more can be bought with money. Park the vehicle in front of the station and pick a slot.Game MechanicDemoThe demo version differs from the Steam Early Access build: far less content (three vehicles, fewer items and points of interest), a mostly straight and flat road, and — thanks to the lighter content — generally better performance.
Game MechanicDrunkAfter drinking beer, the character becomes drunk: vision blurs and the car receives random steering inputs, making it harder to drive.
Game MechanicGold barA gold bar is a valuable object that can be deposited at any ATM for $1000 and carried in a backpack. It spawns in spots that usually lack an ATM — on top of the water tower, next to a billboard, and similar places.
Game MechanicGraffitiGraffiti is found at several points of interest. Players cannot create their own with spray paint. According to the game credits the art is by Kstar, and the game assets include 39 graffiti textures.
Game MechanicMoneyMoney is the game's currency. It is earned by finding stacks of cash or gold bars at points of interest, or by completing Horizon Express quests, and spent through the computer on items, parts and accessories — or withdrawn as stacks of cash at an ATM.Game MechanicMultiplayerMultiplayer is a game mode built around a host and server, supporting up to four players. Sessions are found through a search bar and joined, optionally with a password. If a player dies, another can revive ("jumpstart") them with a fully charged battery.
Game MechanicMusicThe game's music was composed by Mathieu "Akadz" Lenfant and plays on the main menu and through the vehicle radio.
Game MechanicPaint-tron 9000The Paint-tron 9000 is a paint-mixing machine that lets you make custom spray-paint colours. Open the cabinet, place an empty spray-paint can and red, green and blue paint cartridges, then select your colour.
Game MechanicPlayerThe player is the character you control. To survive, you must keep your needs — hunger, thirst and health — topped up with food and drink.Game MechanicRadio stationA radio station is a frequency channel on the vehicle radio. Stations include Drift Radio, Horizons Classic, Hyperbass and No Limit.
Game MechanicSkyThe sky changes with the day-night cycle and the weather (clear, cloudy, or lightning). The sun and moon gradually move across it, and birds fly overhead.
Game MechanicTerrainThe terrain is a desert, most likely set in the south-western United States, judging by much of the vegetation and landmarks such as the California Motel.Game MechanicVegetationThe terrain features mostly North American desert vegetation — dry and Pacific-Northwest grasses, birch-like "beer" trees, and cacti such as ocotillo — with some species from other biomes mixed in.
Game MechanicWeatherWeather is dynamic, transitioning gradually between clear, cloudy, overcast, foggy, dust/sand storm and rain (with lightning and rainbows). Volumetric rendering is used for the clouds and fog.Game MechanicWeightWeight is measured in kilograms (kg) and liquid capacity in litres (L). Every item and vehicle shows its weight in the mouseover tooltip, and every liquid container shows its capacity — key numbers when balancing a build for speed.
